Washed Out – Within and Without

7.8/10

We all know Ernest Greene, aka Washed Out, as one of the initial innovators of the chillwave/glo-fi sound, and on Within and Without he doesn’t try to break away from the genre in anyway — although there are some slight differences from the sound of the Life Of Leisure EP. On Life Of Leisure,¬† there’s a more nostalgic sample based sound.

On this album Greene uses less samples, and he seems to have gained some confidence in his singing ability. On the track “A Dedication,” for instance, he brings his vocals to the forefront instead of them being, er… washed out. Most of these songs are really good, but there’s those few that are too repetitive and seem to just drag on way too long.

Within and Without is solid, but it doesn’t live up to how good¬† Life Of Leisure is.
