What I can say about Helplessness Blues is one word; “Beautiful”. The vocals on this album by Robin Pecknold are spot on, that are backed up by some great harmonies. Robin’s voice is so powerful he could carry all the songs with just his voice alone and no instruments. This album has a real stripped down feel to it anyways, on some songs with just an acoustic guitar playing in the background. One of the tracks I’m not really a fan of though, is the song “The Cascades” which is just an instrumental of mostly just some finger picking on an acoustic. Then there’s the sincere wistful song “Blue Spotted Tail” where he asks life’s great questions. This all leads up to the end song and my favorite of the album “Grown Ocean” where Robin describes a dream that is his own paradise without any worries or cares. The song builds up with powerful drums and ends with him singing A cappella. It’s a great closing song. This album is consistent all the way through with very few dull parts.
