I’m sure you’re all quite familiar with Cults, the infectious pop couple that is: Madeline Follins (vocals) and Brian Oblivion (guitar, vocals). They blew up through the blogosphere and were one of the most buzzed about bands in 2010. They got their recognition with their “Go Outside” 7″, It was originally released on their Bandcamp and on vinyl by Gorilla vs. Bear’s label; Family Forest Records. It contained only three songs, but apparently that’s all it took for major label; Columbia to want to sign them. I came into Cults’ debut with such high hopes considering the only songs they’ve released prior, (“Go Outside”, “Most Wanted” and “Oh My God”) I’ve been playing non stop throughout the past year.  Those songs have been carried over to this album and unfortunately, those are pretty much the best tracks on here. The new songs aren’t horrible, they’re just really bland.
None of them really stand out or have the same appeal as the 7″ that made me fall in love with Cults’ music. Although it’s only 3 minutes and 40 seconds long, an excruciatingly boring song to try to get through is “Bad Things”. Although, the next song “Bumper” makes up for it, a song that is upbeat and enjoyable. The album then ends with the song “Rave On”, a pretty uninteresting song that has them repeating the phrase/song title; “Rave On”. In all Cults’ debut is kind of disappointing, but still a pretty good listen.
